摘要
Government of India recognizes that gas hydrates are a possible future energy resource and has initiated several domestic research programs in coastal and marine geology, climate change, and energy potential. This chapter summarizes key developments in the history of gas hydrate geotechnical studies globally and describes recent analysis of seismic data for natural gas hydrate in India. Under the second expedition of National Gas Hydrate Program (NGHP-02) of India, ONGC is appointed as the nodal agency for the central KG offshore and Reliance Industries Limited for the northern KG offshore, Cauvery basin and Mahanadi basin. Exploring gas hydrate bearing sand is one of the key tasks identified in NGHP-02. The chapter also presents the latest breakthrough of global importance in identifying seismic leads for the sand-rich areas within the gas hydrate stability zone in India. The key findings in three identified areas in KG offshore were presented to the technical team of NGHP. Six to eight locations have been recognized in Vizag offshore area to probe gas hydrate bearing sands. This chapter has provided a new impetus to the gas hydrate exploration in India. This chapter also summarizes key production concept, issues, and problems in extracting methane from gas hydrate and Indian efforts in this direction.
