Social Engagements in Geothermal Energy Development in the Philippines摘要
The Philippines is one of the world’s top producers of geothermal energy, with an installed capacity of 1951.735 MW as of 2022. With a long history of geothermal production since the 1960s, the Philippines formulated a geothermal energy roadmap to encourage expansion of geothermal energy development. Along with this planned expansion, the government has envisaged to enhance public awareness of geothermal energy since political opposition and low levels of social acceptance are recognized barriers to development efforts. The country’s Department of Energy, in cooperation with the private geothermal developers, continuously implement information and education campaigns and other civic engagements to promote renewable energy to potential host communities. The limited available public information on these social engagements, as well as the social-scientific research on geothermal energy are presented in this study. Local community engagement efforts of the Philippine geothermal industry should be highlighted while encouraging more published studies on social engagement in the context of the socio-cultural dynamics of geothermal sites.
